The First Step Is Never as Big as You Think

One of the biggest reasons people stay stuck is not because they don't know what they want. It's because they never take the first step. They spend months—or even years—thinking, planning, researching, and waiting for the perfect time to start.

I know because I've been there.

I've made lists.

I've created plans.

I've prayed about dreams.

I've waited for clarity.

But eventually I learned something that changed everything:

Nothing changes until you do.

At some point, planning has to become action. You don't need to have the entire journey mapped out before you begin. You simply need enough faith to take the next step.

You Cannot Steer a Parked Car

Many people are waiting for God to reveal the entire plan before they move forward. But often God reveals the next step after we move. Think about it this way. You cannot steer a car that isn't moving.

The same is true in life. When we refuse to take action because we're afraid of making mistakes, we often stay stuck in the very place we're praying for God to move us from.

God has a purpose for your life.

The Bible reminds us:

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." — Jeremiah 29:11

That doesn't mean the journey will be easy. It means God is faithful. Even when we've made mistakes. Even when we've missed opportunities. Even when we've taken detours.

It's Not Too Late

One of the lies many people believe is:

"I missed my chance."

Maybe you ignored God's direction.

Maybe fear stopped you.

Maybe life happened.

Maybe you spent years pursuing things that weren't part of God's plan.

I've been there too.

But here's what I've learned:

God specializes in redemption.

He has a way of taking broken pieces, missed opportunities, painful experiences, and even our mistakes and weaving them into something beautiful. What feels like a wasted season often becomes preparation for the next season. That's grace.

Not because we deserve endless opportunities. But because God is merciful. And because He isn't finished with your story.

Fear Will Always Show Up

When I made the decision to leave Arkansas and move to Las Vegas, I was terrified. I had countless questions running through my mind.

What if I fail?

What if I don't like it?

What if I can't make it on my own?

What if I get there and still feel lost?

What if things don't work out?

Maybe you've asked similar questions about your own dreams. The truth is, fear often shows up anytime we're about to do something meaningful.

And here's the funny thing:

Many of the fears I had actually happened.

There were hard days.

There were unexpected challenges.

There were moments I doubted myself.

There were times I had no idea what I was doing.

But none of those things destroyed me. I figured them out. One challenge at a time. One decision at a time. One day at a time.

The fear wasn't the problem. The problem would have been allowing fear to stop me from moving forward.

Why Your "Why" Matters

When life gets difficult, motivation fades. That's why you need something deeper than motivation. You need a reason. You need a why.

When I was rebuilding my life, I had several powerful reasons that reminded me why I couldn't quit. Those reasons carried me through difficult seasons. When one reason felt weak, another reminded me why I started.

Your why becomes an anchor when storms come.

Ask yourself:

  • Why do I want this change?
  • Why is this dream important?
  • Why am I willing to fight for it?
  • What will happen if I stay where I am?

The stronger your why, the harder it becomes to quit.

You Must Learn to Challenge Fear

Fear is loud.

It always has something to say.

What if you fail?

What if people judge you?

What if you're not qualified?

What if you're making a mistake?

What if you're not good enough?

The problem is that fear rarely tells the whole story.

Fear focuses on what could go wrong.

Faith focuses on what God can do.

One of the most important skills you can develop is learning how to redirect your thoughts.

Instead of asking:

"What if I fail?"

Ask:

"What if God opens a door I never expected?"

Instead of saying:

"What if I can't do it?"

Ask:

"What if God gives me everything I need when I need it?"

Instead of focusing on obstacles, start focusing on possibilities.

God Doesn't Always Call the Qualified

Many people believe they need to become qualified before God can use them. But throughout Scripture, we see the opposite.

Moses felt unqualified.

Gideon felt unqualified.

Jeremiah felt unqualified.

Peter felt unqualified.

Yet God used each of them. Why? Because God doesn't always call the qualified. He qualifies the called.

If God has placed something on your heart, don't disqualify yourself before you've even started. You don't need to know everything. You simply need to be willing.

The Importance of Accountability

Trying to change your life alone is difficult. That's why accountability matters. Throughout my own journey, I've had people who challenged me, encouraged me, and helped me see things I couldn't see on my own.

Not everyone stayed for the entire journey. Some people were there for a season. Others remained longer. That's okay.

God often brings different people into our lives for different stages of growth. The key is finding people who:

  • Encourage your growth
  • Speak truth with love
  • Point you toward God
  • Challenge you when necessary
  • Celebrate your progress

The right people won't make decisions for you. But they can help you make wiser decisions.

Progress Requires Adjustment

One mistake people make is believing they have to create the perfect plan before they begin. The reality is that most successful people adjust as they go.

As you take action, you'll discover:

  • What's working
  • What's not working
  • What needs improvement
  • What opportunities you hadn't considered

That's normal. Every journey requires course corrections. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is progress.

Take action.

Evaluate.

Adjust.

Repeat.

Over time, those adjustments move you closer to where God is leading you.

Stop Waiting and Start Moving

If you're waiting until you feel completely ready, you may be waiting forever. Most life-changing decisions are made before confidence arrives. Courage isn't the absence of fear. Courage is moving forward despite fear.

The first step doesn't have to be huge.

It might be:

  • Making a phone call
  • Filling out an application
  • Starting a savings account
  • Joining a class
  • Having a difficult conversation
  • Writing down your goals
  • Launching the project you've been putting off

Small steps still count. In fact, small steps are often what create the biggest transformations.

Final Thoughts

You don't need perfect timing.

You don't need perfect confidence.

You don't need perfect circumstances.

You simply need a willingness to move.

The life you want isn't built in a day. It's built one decision, one step, and one act of faith at a time.

Stop waiting for certainty. Take the next step. God can do far more with a moving person than a stalled one.

Reflection Question

What is one action you've been putting off because of fear—and what would happen if you took that first step today?
