Have you ever felt excited about a dream, a goal, or a new direction in your life—only to talk yourself out of it before you ever started?
Or maybe you shared your idea with someone you trusted, hoping for encouragement, only to hear all the reasons it would never work.
If so, you've encountered what I call a dream stealer. Dream stealers aren't always bad people.
Sometimes they're friends. Sometimes they're family members. Sometimes they're coworkers.
And sometimes the biggest dream stealer of all is the person staring back at you in the mirror.
Not Everyone Will Understand Your Calling
One of the hardest lessons I've learned is that not everyone will understand the vision God gives you. God doesn't reveal every dream, assignment, or purpose to everyone around you.
He reveals it to you. That means there will be times when you feel called to do something and the people around you don't understand it. Maybe they think it's unrealistic. Maybe they think it's too risky.
Maybe they think you're setting yourself up for failure. Most of the time, they're not trying to hurt you. They're trying to protect you from what they fear. The problem is that people often project their fears onto your future.
They see what could go wrong instead of what God could do.
The Biggest Dream Stealer Is Often Self-Doubt
While other people's opinions can be discouraging, I've discovered that the loudest critic is usually the voice inside our own heads.
The voice that says:
- You're not qualified.
- You're too old.
- You're too late.
- You're not smart enough.
- You've failed before.
- Who do you think you are?
I know that voice well. For years, I allowed fear and self-doubt to keep me stuck. I doubted my ability to start over. I doubted my ability to rebuild my life. I doubted whether God could really use my story. But the truth is, God has never called us to rely on our own qualifications. He calls us to rely on Him.
The Enemy Wants You to Stay Stuck
Jesus said:
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." — John 10:10
The enemy doesn't have to destroy your dream if he can convince you to abandon it. He doesn't have to stop you if he can make you stop yourself. That's why fear is such a powerful weapon.
Fear keeps people:
- Stuck in unhealthy relationships
- Stuck in jobs they hate
- Stuck in limiting beliefs
- Stuck in lives they secretly wish were different
Fear convinces us that staying miserable is safer than risking change. But growth has never lived inside a comfort zone.
Pay Attention to Who Influences You
The people around you matter.
Take a moment to think about the voices you listen to most often.
Do they:
- Encourage growth?
- Strengthen your faith?
- Challenge you to become better?
- Believe in your potential?
Or do they constantly:
- Criticize
- Complain
- Discourage
- Focus on everything that could go wrong?
You don't have to remove every negative person from your life. But you do need to be intentional about whose voice carries the most weight.
The people closest to you will either fuel your growth or feed your fears.
What You Think Matters
One of the greatest battles you'll ever fight is the battle in your mind. Long before we change our lives, we change our thinking.
Many people spend years focusing on:
- Their mistakes
- Their failures
- Their fears
- Their limitations
Then they wonder why they feel stuck. Your thoughts shape your actions. Your actions shape your habits. Your habits shape your life. The Apostle Paul reminds us to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.
Not every thought deserves your attention. Not every fear deserves your agreement. Not every lie deserves your belief.
Stop Living for Other People's Approval
This may be one of the most freeing lessons I've ever learned:
What other people think about you is not your responsibility.
Read that again. As women, we often spend years trying to gain approval. We want everyone to understand us. Support us. Agree with us. Validate us. But if God has called you to something, the approval that matters most is His.
Paul writes:
"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?" — Galatians 1:10
When we allow fear of other people's opinions to control our decisions, we give them authority they were never meant to have.
Remember Who You Are
The most powerful way to overcome dream stealers is to know who you are in Christ.
You are not defined by:
- Your past mistakes
- Your failures
- Your fears
- Other people's opinions
- Your current circumstances
You are defined by God's truth.
His Word says:
- You are loved.
- You are chosen.
- You are redeemed.
- You are capable through Christ.
- You are more than a conqueror.
- You are equipped for what He has called you to do.
When you truly believe that, dream stealers begin to lose their power.
Final Thoughts
The greatest obstacle standing between you and the life God has for you may not be your circumstances. It may not be your resources. It may not even be other people. It may be the fear, doubt, and limiting beliefs you've been carrying for years.
The good news?
Those things don't have to control your future. God has not called you to live small. He has not called you to hide. He has not called you to spend your life wondering "what if." He has called you to walk by faith.
Trust Him.
Take the next step.
And don't allow fear—or anyone else's opinion—to steal the dream God placed in your heart.
Reflection Question
What dream, goal, or calling have you been talking yourself out of lately?
And what would happen if you trusted God enough to take the first step anyway?
