Have you ever looked around at your life and wondered:
"How did I get here?"
I know I have. In October of 2020, I found myself asking that exact question. I looked around at my life and realized I wasn't where I wanted to be. I wasn't living the life I had dreamed about, and deep down I knew I wasn't living the life God had intended for me either.
That realization was painful.
For years, I had blamed circumstances, other people, bad luck, and situations outside of my control. But when I finally took an honest look at my life, I had to admit something difficult:
Many of the decisions that led me there were my own.
That wasn't easy to accept.
But it was also the moment everything started to change.
You Have to Evaluate Your Life Honestly
One of the most important things I did was evaluate my entire life.
I looked at:
My past
My present
My habits
My relationships
My mindset
My choices
I asked myself some hard questions:
What decisions brought me here?
What patterns keep repeating?
What needs to change?
The truth is, if we don't understand how we got where we are, it's difficult to create a different future. You can't change what you're unwilling to acknowledge. That's why evaluation is so important. Not to beat yourself up. Not to live in regret. But to gain clarity.
Your Future Is Being Built By Today's Decisions
Every decision we make is building our future. The life you're living today is largely the result of decisions you've made over time. The good news?
The life you'll be living a year from now will also be shaped by the decisions you start making today. That's incredibly empowering. Because it means your story is not finished.
No matter where you are right now, you can begin making different choices.
Discover God's Vision For Your Life
One of the biggest mistakes I made was spending years pursuing what I thought I wanted instead of seeking God's direction first.
The Bible tells us:
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." — Jeremiah 29:11
God has a purpose for your life. He has placed unique gifts, passions, dreams, and desires inside of you for a reason. Sometimes the dreams God places in our hearts don't make sense.
Sometimes they feel impossible. Sometimes they scare us. But often those dreams are clues pointing us toward the purpose He created us for.
Instead of asking:
"What do I want my life to look like?"
Try asking:
"What does God want my life to look like?"
That question changed everything for me.
Start Seeing Your Life Differently
When I looked at my future honestly, I realized something. The life I wanted and the life I was headed toward were not the same. If I kept making the same choices, nothing would change. I had to start seeing a different future before I could create one. Too many people allow their current circumstances to define their possibilities.
They believe:
It's too late.
I'm too old.
I've made too many mistakes.
Things will never change.
Those are lies.
Jesus said:
"With God all things are possible." — Matthew 19:26
Not some things.
Not easy things.
All things.
Your current circumstances are not the final chapter of your story.
Write Down The Life You Want
One of the most practical things you can do is write down your dreams. Don't worry about how you'll accomplish them yet. Just write them down.
Ask yourself:
What do I want my faith to look like?
What do I want my relationships to look like?
What do I want my health to look like?
What do I want my finances to look like?
What kind of person do I want to become?
Dream bigger than your current reality. Too many people shrink their dreams to match their circumstances. God never asked us to limit Him to what we can currently see.
Don't Let Fear Make Your Decisions
Fear will always try to convince you to stay where you are.
It will tell you:
It's too risky.
You're not qualified.
You might fail.
You're not ready.
I know those voices well. In February 2021, I packed everything I owned into my car and drove 1,200 miles across the country to start over.
Was I scared? Absolutely.
Did I know exactly what would happen? Not even close.
But I knew staying where I was would cost me more than leaving. Sometimes faith looks like taking the next step before you have all the answers.
God Has More For You
Jesus said:
"I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." — John 10:10
That doesn't mean life will be easy. But it does mean God desires more for you than simply surviving.
He desires growth.
Healing.
Purpose.
Freedom.
Peace.
The first step toward that life begins with an honest evaluation of where you are today. Because you can't create a different future until you're willing to face your present reality.
Final Thoughts
The day I stopped asking, "Why is my life like this?" and started asking, "What choices do I need to make differently?" was the day my life began to change.
You don't have to stay stuck. You don't have to settle. And you don't have to figure it all out today. Just take the first step. Evaluate where you are. Seek God's direction. Write down your vision.
Then begin moving toward the life He has placed in your heart.
One decision at a time.
